Ex-MP Warns Portugal's Election Commission Crisis Threatens Democracy
Former Socialist MP Fernando Anastácio has spoken out against the ongoing conflict within Portugal’s National Election Commission (CNE). He claims the dispute reflects an attempt to undermine democracy and increase government control over the body.
Anastácio argued that the current internal strife has no valid justification. He described the situation as unnecessary and damaging to the institution’s reputation.
He also strongly opposed proposals to abolish the CNE. The commission, he noted, has operated for 50 years and earned international recognition for its work.
The criticism comes as tensions within the CNE continue to grow. Anastácio’s remarks highlight concerns over potential political interference in an institution long seen as independent. The debate over its future remains unresolved.
