Approximately 150 far-right incidents at Saxony-Anhalt's schools - Far-right crimes surge in Saxony-Anhalt schools, sparking calls for action
Saxony-Anhalt recorded 149 far-right crimes in schools and universities during 2022. The incidents included assaults, propaganda offences, and hate speech, raising concerns over student safety. Now, the Left Party (Die Linke) is pushing for stronger measures to tackle extremism in education. The crimes spanned secondary schools, grammar schools, and vocational colleges. Over 120 cases involved far-right propaganda, while 14 were classified as incitement to hatred. Other offences included assault, coercion, insults, and property damage.
Five suspects were linked to violent youth groups, with one tied to the far-right political scene. In response, the Left Party is demanding more school social workers, teacher training, and protection plans for affected institutions. They also want long-term counselling and support programmes to create safer learning environments. To counter extremist ideologies, the party is calling for expanded student visits to memorial sites. Their proposals aim to prevent radicalisation and ensure schools remain inclusive spaces.
The Left Party’s demands focus on prevention, support, and education. If implemented, the measures would increase staffing, training, and resources for schools. The goal is to reduce far-right incidents and protect students across Saxony-Anhalt.
