New FDP Chairman: Won't Wear Cowboy Boots - FDP Thuringia elects new leader after years of electoral decline

Torsten Klöppel, a 41-year-old self-employed merchant, has been elected as the new chairman of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) in Thuringia. He won the vote with 99 out of 100 possible votes. Klöppel's election comes after a period of struggle for the FDP, which failed to re-enter the Bundestag nationally with 4.3% of the vote and won only 1.1% in the 2024 state election.

Klöppel, who is also chairman of an allotment garden association, has pledged to prioritize teamwork within the party. He criticized the previous leadership's overreliance on a single figure, namely former state chairman Thomas Kemmerich. Kemmerich, who resigned from the FDP in September 2022 and later joined Team Freiheit, was known for his prominent role in the party.

Klöppel has vowed to focus on policy rather than personality, unlike Kemmerich who was often seen in cowboy boots. He has also promised not to dominate campaign posters alone. Klöppel is a father of two, with one child from his current partnership and another from a previous relationship. Andrea Dittrich and Dirk Bergner were elected as first and second deputy chairmen respectively, supporting Klöppel's leadership.

Torsten Klöppel's election as FDP chairman in Thuringia signals a shift in the party's approach, with a focus on collective leadership and policy over personality. Despite recent electoral struggles, Klöppel's team is ready to rebuild and refocus the party's efforts.
