Rhön districts unite with landmark partnership for regional growth
With the ceremonial signing of partnership agreements, the districts of Schmalkalden-Meiningen and Rhön-Grabfeld have recently taken a significant step toward closer intermunicipal cooperation.
In the presence of faction leaders from both district councils, District Administrator Peggy Greiser and District Administrator Thomas Habermann officially signed the agreement.
Both sides expressed their delight at the now formally sealed partnership, which builds on numerous existing contacts and successful collaborations.
The goal is to deepen the historically rooted connections and bring them to life through concrete, sustainable projects.
"Do good and talk about it," said District Administrator Peggy Greiser after signing and sealing the partnership documents. She expressed gratitude for the long-standing ties between the two districts.
Her counterpart, Thomas Habermann, echoed her sentiments, recalling the reunification over 30 years ago ("What belongs together grows together"). In this cross-border partnership, he noted, each side benefits from the other—not materially, but in spirit.
A central unifying element of this partnership is the Rhön Biosphere Reserve, which for over 30 years has served as a cross-border institution fostering cooperation in nature conservation, sustainability, and regional development. It provides ideal opportunities for joint projects and initiatives.
Successful collaborations already exist in sports: The joint primary school football tournament has become a fixed part of youth engagement and will now alternate annually between the two districts. Additional sporting formats, such as a shared "Rhön Cup," are also in the works.
In tourism and regional development, Rhön GmbH plays a key role. It will increasingly contribute to joint marketing efforts, such as developing shared themed routes or digital experiences along the former inner-German border.
Another unifying factor is infrastructure: The A71 motorway—home to a shared motorway church—symbolizes the growing together of the regions and enables fast, direct connections between the districts. A tangible result of German reunification, it now actively facilitates exchange and cooperation.
Beyond these priorities, the partnership covers numerous other areas, including culture, education, youth work, and programs for seniors.
Plans include joint educational projects, cultural exchange programs, and intergenerational initiatives.
To ensure the partnership's long-term success, both districts will designate permanent contacts and establish a regular Partnership Council for ongoing dialogue.
With this signing, both districts have sent a strong signal for collaboration, cohesion, and a shared future in the Rhön.
