Federal Highway 27 shuts down next week due to rockfall risk
Federal Highway 27 (B27) will close between Bad Lauterberg and Braunlage from May 18. The shutdown comes as crews prepare to remove unstable rock and debris from the slope above the road. Drivers should expect delays and plan alternative routes for about a week. The closure begins on May 18, with work focusing on clearing loose material from the steep embankment. Authorities have deemed the rockfall risk too high to keep the route open during operations.
A signed detour will guide motorists around the affected section. Traffic will be rerouted via Federal Highway 243, followed by State Roads 604, 601, and 600. The diversion is expected to remain in place for roughly seven days while the clearance is completed.
The B27 will reopen once the slope is secured and debris is removed. Until then, drivers must follow the designated detour to avoid the closed stretch. Officials have not announced any further restrictions beyond the initial one-week period.
