AfD Politician's Home Vandalized in Suspected Far-Left Attack Before Elections
State security authorities are investigating a suspected far-left attack on the home and car of Julia Gehrckens, a 27-year-old AfD politician in Winsen (Luhe). Unknown assailants smeared black paint over her property, slashed her car tyres, and scrawled the word 'Nazi' on her garage door. The incident has raised concerns about political tensions ahead of local elections in September.
Gehrckens, an alternate member on the federal board of the AfD’s youth wing, Generation Deutschland, is running for a seat on the Winsen city council. She described the attack as 'another step in the escalation' and admitted feeling both disappointed and speechless. The financial cost of the damage remains unclear as she awaits confirmation from her building insurance.
Initial suspicions point to a politically motivated attack, though the perpetrators and their exact motives are still unknown. Robert Offermann, chair of the local AfD chapter, condemned the incident as 'far-left street terrorism'. The attack follows months of opposition to Gehrckens’ candidacy, including a video released in April by the Left Party in the Harburg district. The clip featured blue balloons with the slogan 'Get Gehrckens out of Winsen'. Earlier, in January, the anarchist group 'Winsen (Luhe) Against Nazis' had pledged to block her election.
The investigation into the attack is ongoing, with state security authorities leading the case. Gehrckens’ campaign for the city council continues amid heightened security concerns. The incident has underscored tensions in the lead-up to September’s local elections.
