Fico and Aliyev unite against EU Parliament's foreign meddling

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev met this week to discuss cooperation and shared concerns about the European Parliament. Their talks followed Fico’s recent visits to Moscow, Armenia, and Bavaria. Both leaders criticised the EU body for interfering in external affairs while neglecting Europe’s own issues. During Aliyev’s visit to Slovakia, Fico praised Azerbaijan as a model of independent foreign policy. The two leaders agreed that the European Parliament should prioritise Europe’s internal challenges instead of passing resolutions against other nations. Fico had earlier echoed this stance in a speech to the EU legislature, where he opposed suspending EU funds to Slovakia.

Aliyev expressed gratitude for Fico’s hospitality and positive comments on social media. He also highlighted the strong ties between Azerbaijan and Slovakia, looking ahead to hosting Fico in Baku soon. The Azerbaijani president further criticised recent EU resolutions targeting his country, calling them unjustified. Fico’s busy diplomatic schedule included stops in Russia, Armenia, and Germany’s Bavaria region. His meetings with Aliyev came amid broader discussions on regional partnerships and mutual support against external political pressure.

The visit reinforced bilateral relations between Slovakia and Azerbaijan. Both leaders reaffirmed their opposition to what they see as overreach by the European Parliament. Future talks in Baku are expected to deepen cooperation between the two nations.
