FPÖ politician sparks outrage after interrupting Tyrolean outdoor Mass
A political row has erupted after FPÖ National Council member Christoph Steiner interrupted an open-air Mass in Tyrol. The incident took place during a sermon by Bishop Hermann Glettler, who had called for greater social cohesion. Steiner’s comments have since drawn widespread condemnation from rival parties. Bishop Glettler delivered his sermon at the outdoor service, urging people to reject division and avoid stoking envy, hatred, and fear. His words prompted a reaction from Steiner, who later claimed the sermon was 'clearly aimed at the FPÖ'.
Steiner then muttered that the bishop 'should have become a politician with the Greens'. When questioned, he insisted the remark was meant only for himself or nearby party colleagues. He also argued that clergy should not use the pulpit to share personal political views.
The response from other parties was swift. ÖVP deputy state parliament leader Dominik Mainusch labelled Steiner’s behaviour as unacceptable. ÖVP club chairman Jakob Wolf also expressed outrage over the interruption. Meanwhile, opposition Green Party lawmakers in Tyrol condemned the remarks as 'anti-democratic'. The incident has intensified tensions between political and religious figures in Tyrol. Steiner’s criticism of Bishop Glettler has sparked debates over the boundaries between faith and politics. Rival parties continue to demand accountability for the disruption during the Mass.
