Freiburg burglar arrested after resident and bystanders detain him mid-escape

A 51-year-old man was arrested in Freiburg’s St. Georgen district after breaking into an apartment on May 8, 2026. The suspect, a German national, is now in pretrial detention following an arrest warrant issued by the Freiburg District Court. The incident began when the suspect entered a ground-floor flat on Neuenburger Straße through a tilted window. Inside, he encountered the female resident before fleeing the scene. The woman immediately alerted her husband and called the police.

Her husband and another bystander later apprehended the suspect near the apartment. Officers found stolen items from the flat in his backpack and pockets. Authorities confirmed the man had previously come to police attention on multiple occasions. The Freiburg Criminal Police are continuing their investigation into the case.

The suspect remains in custody as the investigation proceeds. The arrest warrant ensures he will face further legal action. Police have not released additional details at this stage.
