German foundation urges stronger ties with global minorities in bold policy shift
The Foundation Connectedness with Germans Abroad has called for a new role for German minorities in foreign policy, urging the German government to strengthen support and political participation. The Bayreuth Declaration demands modernization of promotion policy and increased international engagement.
The Foundation views German minorities as crucial bridge builders and conveyors of a modern German image. They can open up economic opportunities and foster innovation through their roles as gateways to new markets and skilled labor alliances. The Foundation emphasizes the importance of strengthening democratic participation through simplified voting possibilities and international advocacy for minority protection.
The Foundation promotes 'citizen diplomacy' through encounters, civil society engagement, and personal biographies. This approach aims to build trust and create long-term bonds with German minorities worldwide, including those in North and South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania, as well as German-speaking Israelis.
The Foundation demands a change of course in German foreign policy to show more responsibility and connectedness with its fellow countrymen abroad. By sustainably strengthening support for German minorities, the German government can foster a more sustainable international positioning and promote democratic values globally.
