Germany debates Olympic bid timing over 1936 Nazi Games legacy
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has spoken out against a bid by Germany to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, according to a report by Der Spiegel.
The presidential office stated that Steinmeier views 2036 as a "historically problematic" year for a German candidacy, as it would mark the 100th anniversary of the 1936 Berlin Games, which Nazi Germany exploited as a propaganda spectacle.
Germany is currently debating whether to pursue hosting the Summer Olympics and Paralympics in 2036, 2040, or 2044.
A spokesperson for the president told Der Spiegel that Steinmeier instead hopes Germany will host the Games in 2040 or 2044.
