Germany Launches First Democracy History Day with The Sound of Democracy Premiere

Germany's First Democracy History Day to Be Marked in Meiningen on March 18, 2026

On March 18, 2026, Germany will observe its inaugural Democracy History Day under the patronage of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The city of Meiningen is joining this new nationwide day of remembrance and education, inviting students from grade 7 and above, as well as all interested members of the public, to a special event. Admission is free.

With this initiative, Meiningen aims to send a powerful message: "Democracy is not just history—it is a living reality."

"March 18 offers an opportunity to make democracy visible and, together with young people, strengthen awareness of democratic values," emphasizes Mayor Fabian Giesder.

A Date Steeped in History

Few dates in German history are as closely tied to pivotal moments in the nation's democratic journey as March 18:

  • 1793: Proclamation of the Mainz Republic and declaration of popular sovereignty
  • 1848: Barricade battles in Berlin and the start of the March Revolution
  • 1920: Defeat of the Kapp Putsch through a nationwide general strike
  • 1990: First free Volkskammer elections in the GDR amid the Peaceful Revolution

These landmark events form the backdrop for Meiningen's commemorative program.

"The Sound of Democracy" – A Multimedia Performance

The highlight of the day is the premiere of "The Sound of Democracy," a one-time performance at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at the Volkshaus Meiningen.

Blending concert, spoken word, and dynamic light and film installations, the production delivers a modern, emotionally charged stage experience. Artists explore key figures, places, and turning points in Germany's democratic history, engaging the audience—particularly young people—in an immediate and interactive way. Since last year, the Leipzig-based collective has been touring this production across Germany.

Meiningen is proud to host this performance as part of the national Democracy History Day. The event also marks a reunion with Miriam Haltmeier, familiar to local audiences from her time at the Meiningen State Theater and still celebrated for her role as Tamara Danz in "Asylum in Paradise."

Complementary Program and Open Invitation

The day will feature exhibitions and informational displays on democracy. Attendance at the performance is free of charge.

Schools wishing to register students (grade 7 and above) and all interested participants are asked to confirm their attendance by February 27, 2026, by emailing [email protected] with an estimated number of attendees.
