Left Tip Top Criticizes Israel Resolution by Youth Wing - Germany’s Left Party in turmoil over youth wing’s divisive Israel resolution
The Left Party in Germany is grappling with a controversial resolution passed by its youth wing, Solid, which harshly criticizes Israel. The party leadership has condemned the resolution, stating it is incompatible with their positions and could delegitimize Israel's right to exist.
The resolution, titled 'Never Again Remain Silent on Genocide', describes Israel as a colonial and racist state, accusing it of maintaining an apartheid system and committing genocide in Gaza. It calls for German socialists to support 'revolutionary democratic and socialist movements in the region'.
The party leadership, however, officially supports a two-state solution in the Middle East and has criticized the resolution's substance. They have also agreed with Solid representatives to address incidents of intimidation, pressure, and exclusion reported against young Left Party members who had reservations about the resolution.
Approved by roughly 70% of delegates at Solid's federal congress, the resolution has sparked a debate within the Left Party. Seventeen lawmakers, including former parliamentary group leaders Dietmar Bartsch and Gregor Gysi, have condemned the resolution in a letter. The party leadership has stated that the resolution must not call into question the protection of Jewish life.
