Germany's VDI Launches Innovation Council to Secure Future Tech Leadership
The Association of German Engineers (VDI) has launched an independent Innovation Council to strengthen Germany’s role as a global innovation leader. Founded 168 years ago, the organisation remains a key voice for engineers, shaping both industry and policy. VDI was established on May 12, 1856, in Alexisbad, following calls from figures like Friedrich Euler for a unified engineering association. Over time, it grew into Germany’s largest professional network for engineers, now representing 125,000 members.
The organisation is known for setting global technical standards and fostering collaboration between science, industry, and government. Its Zukunft Deutschland 2050 initiative highlights its role as a platform, catalyst, and advocate for engineering excellence. Recently, VDI President Prof. Lutz Eckstein created the Innovation Council to provide long-term, technology-focused advice. Modeled after Germany’s Council of Economic Experts, the new body will deliver actionable recommendations for policymakers and businesses. Eckstein emphasised that engineers have been central to Germany’s success and will continue to drive its future.
The Innovation Council aims to turn technical expertise into practical strategies for industry and government. With its long history and broad influence, VDI remains a cornerstone of Germany’s engineering and innovation landscape.
