Green Party backs Christian Pelikan for historic Wesel district bid
At their joint general meeting held at the AWO Community Center in Neukirchen-Vluyn, the Green Party branches of Moers and Neukirchen-Vluyn unanimously elected their direct candidate: Christian Pelikan was chosen by members to represent Constituency 60 (Moers/Neukirchen-Vluyn) in North Rhine-Westphalia's state parliamentary elections in April 2027.
The 34-year-old father of two, who hails from Neukirchen-Vluyn, had previously secured the top vote from the district association, bolstering his position ahead of the party's broader nomination process.
"I am deeply grateful to the members for their overwhelming trust and unanimous support," Pelikan said following his election. "Together with the people here, I want to demonstrate that social justice, lived diversity, and decisive climate action—including opposition to further gravel mining—alongside a genuine transport transition all go hand in hand. My goal is to ensure our region is finally represented by a strong Green voice in the state parliament, delivering tangible improvements for the people of Moers, Neukirchen-Vluyn, and the entire district of Wesel."
The chairs of the local Green Party branches—Doro Laakmann, Silvan Olzog, and Karin Fetzer—expressed great satisfaction with the result and looked ahead to the next 12 months with optimism: "We warmly congratulate Christian Pelikan on this unanimous outcome. With his clear principles, his connection to the people, and his commitment to a sustainable future, he brings strong qualifications to the table. Together, we are working to elect the first Green representative from the district of Wesel to the state parliament—a goal that is now within reach."
In his congratulatory remarks, Silvan Olzog added: "We thank Christian Pelikan for his willingness to dedicate his time to the citizens of the Wesel district. Our candidate can count on the full support of members from both Moers and Neukirchen-Vluyn."
