Dortmund's Katharinentreppe hit by mass graffiti vandalism overnight
A large group of vandals targeted Katharinentreppe in Dortmund early on Sunday morning. Around 20 to 30 people sprayed graffiti across the site, causing thousands of euros in damage. Police have since launched an investigation and are searching for more witnesses to the incident. The vandalism took place at approximately 12:30 a.m., when the group covered parts of the staircase with graffiti. They recorded the act using a drone, which was later seized by officers.
The vandals scattered as soon as the first police units arrived at the scene. Authorities have since identified a 29-year-old man from Schwerte as a suspect. Investigators are now reviewing evidence, including witness statements and the confiscated drone footage. Repairs to the damaged area are expected to cost several thousand euros. Police have urged anyone with additional information to come forward to assist the ongoing inquiry.
The investigation remains active, with officers examining all available evidence. The confiscated drone and witness accounts will play a key role in identifying those responsible. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether further arrests will follow.
