Grenzach-Wyhlen seeks federal funds to revive its 68-year-old pool

Grenzach-Wyhlen is preparing to compete for federal funding to renovate its ageing outdoor pool. The town council will vote on May 19, 2026, on whether to apply for a share of the €250 million available nationwide. Officials hope the money will help address long-standing issues with the 68-year-old facility. The town’s outdoor pool, constructed in 1958, now faces serious problems. Water loss has become a major concern, and the infrastructure urgently needs modernisation. To tackle this, the local government has already set aside €50,000 in its 2025 budget for a feasibility study.

A detailed renovation study will explore different upgrade options. Once completed, the findings will be shared with residents before the summer recess. Only after this analysis will the town submit a formal funding request. The federal ‘Modernization of Public Swimming Pools’ programme offers €250 million for municipal upgrades. However, competition for the funds is expected to be intense. Despite the challenges, the administration has recommended moving forward with an application.

If approved, the grant could provide much-needed support for the pool’s refurbishment. The town must first finalise its study and secure council backing. A decision on the application will come after the May 19 vote.
