Halle school unites 400 students with politicians for democracy workshops

More than 400 students took part in Political Education Day at J. C. von Dreyhaupt Vocational School III in Halle-Neustadt. The event, held as part of the School Without Racism – School With Courage network, included workshops, discussions, and a panel with state politicians.

The day began with a series of interactive sessions. Students analysed party manifestos, attended readings by the activist group Omas gegen Rechts, and joined talks led by historian Lothar Rochau. A Living Library event also took place, focusing on democratic education and combating discrimination.

A panel discussion featured five state parliament members: Katja Pähle (SPD), Hendrik Lange (The Left), Wolfgang Aldag (Greens), Christian Albrecht (CDU), and Konstantin Pott (FDP). With the regional election set for September 6, 2026, the politicians answered questions and debated key issues. The school, which trains around 1,300 students across over 30 professions and academic fields, has a diverse student body. About one in four learners comes from an immigrant background. Principal Ina Zober highlighted the event as proof of the school’s ongoing commitment to the network’s principles.

The Political Education Day brought together students, educators, and lawmakers for open dialogue. The workshops and discussions aimed to strengthen democratic values and prepare young people for informed political participation. The school plans to continue similar initiatives in the future.
