Halle's Museum Renaming Debate Hits Another Delay Over Heritage Name
Halle’s city council has delayed a decision on renaming the museum at the Saline site. The debate over whether to restore the name Halloren- und Salinemuseum has dragged on for years. This time, the CDU called for further review, sparking frustration among supporters of the change.
The Hauptsache Halle faction has pushed for the original name’s return since 2020. Their latest proposal, Halloren- und Salinemuseum, dropped the word Technisches to gain broader support in the council. Despite this adjustment, the CDU argued that the revised motion still required closer examination.
Andreas Schachtschneider, deputy faction leader, accused opponents of using procedural delays to block the name change. He claimed the postponement was a political move to prevent *Halloren* from reappearing. Mario Kerzel, the faction’s cultural policy spokesperson, warned that shortening the name to just *Salinemuseum* would erase a key part of Halle’s heritage. Andreas Wels, leader of Hauptsache Halle, criticised the council’s indecision. He argued that the issue had already been thoroughly debated and that further delays served no purpose. Wels also stressed that the city’s identity should not be sidelined, vowing that the campaign would continue.
The matter now returns to the cultural committee for additional review. The CDU’s request extends the timeline, leaving the museum’s final name unresolved. Supporters of Halloren- und Salinemuseum remain determined to press for a vote in the next session.
