Aldi Süd sells its luxury Öschberghof hotel to refocus on retail core

Aldi Süd has agreed to sell its luxury hotel, Öschberghof, to the Gustav Zech Foundation. The move comes as the supermarket chain refocuses on its core retail operations. Owned by Aldi Süd since the 1970s, the hotel will now pass to a buyer with deep experience in hospitality.

The sale marks a shift in Aldi Süd’s strategy, prioritising cost-cutting and its main grocery business. Öschberghof, a long-standing asset, generated €30.7 million in revenue last year. Despite the change in ownership, daily operations are expected to remain the same.

The Gustav Zech Foundation, part of the Zech Group, specialises in hotel management. Michael Artner, the current managing director, will stay in his role after the deal closes. However, the transaction still requires approval from antitrust regulators before finalising. Aldi Süd has framed the sale as part of a wider restructuring effort. By stepping back from non-core ventures, the company aims to streamline its focus on retail efficiency and growth.

Once approved, the deal will transfer Öschberghof to a new owner while keeping its leadership and operations intact. The hotel’s future under the Zech Group will depend on regulatory clearance. Aldi Süd’s decision reflects a broader push to simplify its business model.
