Halle's Ratshof elevator remains broken for nearly two years despite upgrades

The main elevator in Halle’s Ratshof has remained out of order since August 24, 2024. Nearly two years of delays have left visitors, particularly those with mobility issues, facing ongoing difficulties. The city council approved a replacement plan last summer, but the lift still isn’t working. The elevator first broke down in late August 2024. Since then, administrative debates over repair costs and feasibility have caused repeated setbacks. Visitors now rely on a rear freight lift, which is often occupied and not meant for public use.

In August 2024, the city council finally agreed to replace the elevator as part of a €500,000 accessibility upgrade. The contract for the new lift has since been awarded, with installation scheduled for completion by the end of 2025. Once the main elevator is fixed, the rear freight lift will also undergo modernisation. The prolonged outage has hit elderly visitors, parents with strollers, and people with disabilities the hardest. Many have struggled to access upper floors of the Ratshof during the extended disruption.

The new elevator forms part of a wider €500,000 project to improve accessibility in the Ratshof. Work is now set to finish by late 2025, ending a near two-year wait. Until then, visitors will continue using the less convenient freight lift at the rear of the building.
