Halle's South City Mall closure sparks protests over lost community lifeline
South City Mall in Halle (Saale) has stood empty for over a week after officials shut it down due to serious fire safety issues. The sudden closure left shoppers and workers in shock, with many arriving on Friday to find the doors locked. Now, residents are rallying to save what they call a vital community space. The mall’s closure began a week and a half ago when authorities identified major fire hazards. Despite the ban, some visitors still turned up on Friday, only to be turned away. Around 100 people later gathered in protest, demanding the mall reopen permanently.
Local residents stressed the mall’s importance beyond shopping. One woman, who has lived in South City for 35 years, called it the heart of the neighbourhood. A pharmacy worker described it as a place where friendships form and people support each other. Organiser Daniel Mahler, who grew up visiting the mall, said it has shaped his life and remains a social anchor for many.
The mall also serves as a key employer for people in South City and the nearby Silberhöhe district. Its dm-drogerie markt branch is the only drugstore available to both areas, making access to essentials harder without it. Julius Neumann, an SPD representative, noted that the city’s development plan already designates the site as a neighbourhood hub. Benny, from the Solidarity Network, praised locals for taking action instead of waiting for solutions. The protest highlights how deeply the mall is woven into daily life for many in Halle. Its closure affects jobs, shopping, and social connections, leaving residents determined to fight for its future. For now, the building remains shut as officials and the community seek a way forward.
