Helene Bubrowski to Break Barriers as FAZ's First Female Co-Publisher in 2027
Helene Bubrowski will become the first woman to join the editorial board of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) as a co-publisher. Her appointment, effective January 1, 2027, marks another step in the newspaper’s gradual shift away from its traditionally conservative stance. Bubrowski has covered legal policy and the Green Party for the FAZ since 2013, earning recognition for her sharp analysis and media presence. Bubrowski’s career at the FAZ began in 2013, where she served as a political editor and Berlin correspondent. Her reporting on the Green Party has played a key role in the paper’s ideological realignment towards the centre-left. This shift gained momentum after the death of long-time co-publisher Frank Schirrmacher in 2014.
Known for her polished demeanour and command of facts, Bubrowski frequently appears on political talk shows. She also won the prestigious Theodor Wolff Prize for her 2023 FAZ essay, *Why a Little More Optimism Would Do Germans Good*. Her appointment follows a pattern of modernisation on the board, where she joins Carsten Knop as one of the ‘modernisers’. The FAZ’s editorial board operates under a unique structure, with four co-publishers sharing authority and dividing editorial responsibilities. With Bubrowski’s arrival, three out of four board members now represent a more progressive direction for the historically conservative newspaper.
Bubrowski’s promotion strengthens the FAZ’s move towards a centre-left perspective. As the first female co-publisher in the paper’s history, she will help shape its editorial direction from 2027. The change reflects broader shifts in German media, where traditional outlets adapt to evolving political and social landscapes.
