Wolfsburg playgrounds partially close over winter maintenance delays

Several playgrounds in Wolfsburg are facing partial closures due to safety concerns. The city administration announced the issue in a recent press release, citing problems with fallen leaves and overgrown weeds. These conditions have affected the impact-absorbing surfaces meant to protect children from injuries.

The problem stems from an unusually long and harsh winter, which delayed essential maintenance work. Stefanie Jäger-Wilke, head of the city’s Green Spaces Department, explained that the late start of spring left little time to address the backlog of tasks. As a result, some areas of the playgrounds now pose a safety risk, particularly where fall protection surfaces have been compromised.

Only parts of each playground are affected, but certain equipment and zones have been temporarily cordoned off. In some cases, entire playgrounds—such as the one on Weserstraße—have had to close completely. The city is currently assessing corrective measures to reopen these areas as soon as possible. Officials have asked for public patience and understanding while repairs are carried out. A list of alternative playgrounds in the area has been made available online. Once the necessary work is finished, the closed sections will be reopened gradually.

The city aims to resolve the issue quickly, ensuring that children can safely return to the playgrounds. Until then, families are encouraged to use the recommended alternatives. Updates on reopening dates will be provided as the work progresses.
