Highway superintendent convicted after shooting DoorDash driver in self-defense claim
John Reilly III, the highway superintendent of Chester, has been found guilty of assault and firearms offences. The charges stem from an incident on 2 May 2025, when he shot and injured a DoorDash delivery driver named Alpha Barry. A sentencing date has now been set for May.
The shooting took place in May last year, leaving Barry wounded. Throughout the trial, Reilly claimed he acted in self-defence, saying he was protecting his family and home. Prosecutors rejected this argument.
Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler condemned Reilly's behaviour as showing *'depraved indifference to human life'*. The jury ultimately convicted him on all counts. Under the most serious charge, Reilly could receive a prison term of up to 25 years. No further details about the case, public reaction in Chester, or media coverage have been made available.
Reilly's sentencing is due next month. The outcome will determine the length of his imprisonment on the assault and weapons convictions. Barry, the injured driver, has not publicly commented on the verdict.
