Hungary's Opposition Secures Landslide Victory in Historic Parliamentary Election
Hendrik Hering, President of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament, has welcomed the outcome of Hungary's latest parliamentary election. He described the decisive victory of the center-right opposition party Tisza, led by Péter Magyar, as a triumph for democracy, liberal values, and European unity.
"Record voter turnout and the opposition's two-thirds majority send a clear message," Hering stated. "They demonstrate once again the immense power that civic engagement can unleash. Hungary, too, has shown in an impressive way that people want liberal democracy as both a form of government and a way of life—and that they stand firmly with Europe. This is especially true for societies that have experienced firsthand what happens when populists and extremists take power: life gets worse for citizens and the country alike. No problems are solved, but new ones emerge—corruption and cronyism, economic decline, the erosion of the rule of law, the suppression of free speech and press freedom, and international isolation, to name just a few of the challenges Hungary has faced over the past 16 years.
Now, the path is open for a return to freedom, prosperity, and peace within a united Europe. That path must now be pursued with determination."
