Koblenz region secures €9.5M in federal sports facility funding
Great News for Koblenz from Berlin: Federal Government Grants €8 Million for Oberwerth Stadium Upgrade
The German Bundestag's Budget Committee announced on Wednesday afternoon that the construction of the new main grandstand at Koblenz's Oberwerth Stadium will receive €8 million in funding under the federal program "Renovation of Municipal Sports Facilities." The news was shared by Koblenz's SPD member of parliament, Dr. Thorsten Rudolph, who had championed the project in his role on the committee.
"I am absolutely delighted that my efforts have paid off and that my colleagues supported my proposal," said Rudolph, who also serves as his parliamentary group's spokesperson on budget policy. "The federal government allocating such a substantial sum is by no means a given—this is in fact the maximum amount possible under this funding program." He emphasized that in times of tight budgets, this level of support for a major renovation project is a significant boost for a city like Koblenz. The funding comes from the federal government's so-called "Sports Billion" initiative, which the Budget Committee launched last year.
For Rudolph, the Oberwerth complex is a vital hub for both events and sports—"a place that must not be allowed to deteriorate further but instead needs substantial investment." The city shares this vision. The new grandstand is part of a broader master plan to modernize the entire Oberwerth Sports Park, which includes an athletics stadium, climbing course, individual sports facilities, and more.
"Over the past few weeks, I've worked closely with Lord Mayor David Langner and Deputy Mayor Ulrike Mohrs, both of whom have been strong advocates for this project. I've been closely involved in preparing the funding application, and I'm already looking forward to sitting in the new grandstand, cheering on Koblenz's athletes," Rudolph added.
The "Sports Billion" initiative is also benefiting the Rhein-Mosel collective municipality. A planned new sports facility in Dieblich will receive roughly €1.46 million in federal funding. "I had previously discussed the project with the collective municipality's mayor, Kathrin Laymann, who has been a driving force behind it. I'm pleased that my efforts in Berlin have once again made a difference—this is invaluable support for a project of great importance to the local community," Rudolph concluded.
