Koblenz shuts down Clemensstraße Sunday for massive crane removal
A major road closure will take place in Koblenz on Sunday, May 17. Clemensstraße will shut completely from 6:00 a.m. to around 6:00 p.m. while workers remove a large crane from the city theatre site. The crane has been in place since summer 2024, supporting ongoing renovations at the theatre. Its dismantling requires a full road shutdown for safety and access.
Public transport will face significant changes during the closure. Bus lines 6, 8, 9, and 10 will divert away from Clemensstraße, missing the 'Stadttheater/Schloss' and 'Rhein-Mosel-Halle' stops. A temporary replacement stop will be set up on the bridge ramp near the Mercure Hotel to serve affected routes. Meanwhile, line 7 will run directly to the main train station, skipping several intermediate stops. Sidewalks and parking bays near numbers 1 to 5 on Clemensstraße will stay closed beyond Sunday, remaining off-limits until the entire construction project finishes. Traffic will follow marked detours, and the road should return to normal two-way operation once the crane is removed.
The closure will disrupt bus services operated by Koblenzer Verkehrsbetriebe (KOVEB) for the day. Once the work is done, the road and remaining parking areas will reopen, though some sidewalks near the theatre will stay closed until construction wraps up.
