Mainz Ranks 14th in Germany's Top Economic Regions After BioNTech Boom
Mainz has been named one of Germany’s top economic regions, securing 14th place in the latest IW Regional Ranking. The city’s rise follows a period of rapid growth, fuelled in part by the success of BioNTech. Though the pace of expansion has eased since its peak, Mainz continues to show strong economic performance.
The IW Regional Ranking evaluates all 400 German districts and independent cities, assessing their economic structure, labour market conditions, and quality of life. Mainz climbed to this position after reaching 2nd place in the 2024 rankings, a jump largely driven by BioNTech’s global impact. While the city’s growth has slowed since that extraordinary boom, it remains well above average.
The labour market in Mainz stays robust, with high employment levels and steady demand for skilled workers. BioNTech’s ongoing investments in its local operations further support the city’s economic stability. Beyond pharmaceuticals, Mainz is also expanding its focus on future industries, creating new spaces for life sciences and biotechnology development.
Tourism has played a growing role in the local economy, with around 1.19 million overnight stays recorded in 2025—a 2.6% increase from the previous year. The city has also strengthened its startup ecosystem, with Futury designated as a national 'Startup Factory'. A new partnership with Heidelberg aims to improve collaboration between research institutions, startups, and investors.
The IW Ranking includes two key assessments: the performance ranking, which highlights the strongest regions today, and the dynamic ranking, which tracks economic progress over recent years. Mainz’s consistent placement in both reflects its balanced growth and long-term potential.
Mainz’s 14th-place finish in the IW Regional Ranking confirms its status as a leading economic hub in Germany. With a strong labour market, rising tourism, and continued investment in innovation, the city maintains its competitive edge. The partnership with Heidelberg and the expansion of biotech sectors suggest further opportunities for development.
