German DAX40 firms face scrutiny over murky carbon credit disclosures
Germany’s largest listed companies are under growing pressure over the transparency of their carbon credit reporting. A new analysis has revealed significant gaps in disclosures made under the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The findings raise questions about whether investors can accurately judge the real-world impact of corporate climate efforts. The study, conducted by Senken and Sylvera, examined fiscal 2025 reports from 39 DAX40 companies. Of these, 21 disclosed purchases totalling 4.84 million metric tons of CO₂ equivalent in carbon credits. However, none provided project-level identifiers, making independent verification impossible.
Nearly half—45%—of the disclosed credits, amounting to 2.17 million tons, could not be traced to specific projects. Only six companies offered additional project details, with four doing so voluntarily and two due to California’s regulatory requirements. Meanwhile, 57% of the 90 assessed projects scored below BBB on Sylvera’s quality framework, indicating concerns over their reliability.
Allister Furey, CEO and co-founder of Sylvera, warned that certification does not guarantee credibility. The analysis also highlighted broader inconsistencies in climate-related disclosures under CSRD, leaving investors with limited clarity on the true environmental impact of corporate claims. The report underscores ongoing challenges in ensuring the accuracy and transparency of carbon credit reporting. With regulators and analysts closely monitoring these disclosures, companies may face increased demands for clearer, more detailed information. The findings suggest that current reporting standards may not yet provide the reliability investors need to assess climate commitments.
