Komi's bold tourism push: A new ministry to unlock hidden travel gems
The Republic of Komi has launched a new Ministry of Tourism to boost its appeal as a travel destination. Headed by Maria Badmatsyrenova, the ministry began operations on January 1, 2026, with plans to develop local tourism through fresh initiatives and events. A key focus will be raising the region's profile with targeted campaigns and contests for travellers and bloggers.
The ministry, staffed by 15 employees, works alongside a Tourism Agency of seven specialists. While the ministry shapes policy and strategy, the agency handles practical implementation. Badmatsyrenova has announced plans to tour the entire republic, assessing its tourism potential firsthand.
This season, the Komi Summer series takes centre stage, featuring events like ShanyaFest and Living Air. The ministry is also exploring a Journey Through Komi contest for local travel bloggers, aiming to showcase hidden gems. Towns such as Izhma and Usinsk have been identified as promising locations for ready-made tour packages. To encourage industry growth, officials are considering a tourism award. It would recognise contributions from public organisations and professionals who help develop the sector.
The new ministry's efforts include image-building campaigns, contests, and awards to strengthen Komi's reputation. With structured events and targeted development, the republic aims to attract more visitors in the coming years. The focus remains on practical projects and partnerships to expand its tourism sector.
