Krefeld's Historic Boiler House Reborn as Kesselwerk Event Venue

Krefeld’s historic boiler house has been transformed into a modern event venue called Kesselwerk. The restoration project, costing millions, was led by Kesselwerk 1954 GmbH & Co. KG under managing director Dr. Jan Schröder. The grand opening is set for mid-May, with the first booking already confirmed for a business breakfast. The former industrial site required extensive work to meet both heritage conservation rules and modern safety standards. Investors poured a seven-figure sum into the renovation, ensuring the building retained its character while gaining up-to-date facilities.

The venue now offers six adaptable spaces for hire, ranging from the 280 sq.m. Herzstück to the intimate 30 sq.m. dubbe.bar. Other rooms include the Meisterbüro (125 sq.m.), Klassenzimmer (95 sq.m.), Schaltzentrale (81 sq.m.), and Filterstube (40 sq.m.). Together, they can host up to 450 guests for conferences, trade fairs, or private celebrations.

Katharina Haßlinger will manage day-to-day operations, renting out Kesselwerk to businesses, organisations, and individuals. Dr. Schröder explained the name blends Kesselhaus (boiler house) and Kraftwerk (power plant), reflecting the site’s industrial past. He also highlighted its prime location near Düsseldorf’s exhibition centre as a key advantage.

Eckart Preen, Krefeld’s economic development officer, welcomed the project’s potential. The first event, a Krefeld Business breakfast organised by Preen, will mark the venue’s official launch in mid-May. Kesselwerk now stands as a versatile event space, combining historic charm with modern functionality. The venue’s varied room sizes and central location aim to attract a wide range of clients. Bookings are open, with the first event scheduled for mid-May.
