Kühnert pushes bold inheritance tax reform to unlock billions for public spending

Kevin Kühnert has called for major changes to inheritance tax laws, focusing on large business assets. He believes reform could bring in billions for public spending. His push comes as he works with the citizens' movement Finanzwende since late 2025. Kühnert argues that the main aim should be ending exemptions for exceptionally large business inheritances. He insists this is not about raising taxes but removing unfair advantages. The SPD’s role in starting the debate has earned his praise.

He expects new rules to pass before the next election. While the conservative Union bloc has shown little interest, Kühnert sees potential for agreement within parts of the party. He has urged SPD co-leaders Bärbel Bas and Lars Klingbeil to push harder for reform in coalition talks. Despite his political engagement, Kühnert has ruled out a return to formal politics. He made it clear he is not 'waiting for the gate to open again' but remains committed to Finanzwende’s campaign for tax fairness.

Kühnert’s proposed reforms could unlock billions in revenue by closing loopholes. He remains optimistic that a deal between the Union and SPD is possible this term. The outcome will depend on coalition negotiations and political will.
