L.A. County Assessor Race Heats Up Amid Calls for Transparency and Tax Reform
Los Angeles County Assessor Jeff Prang is facing four challengers in the upcoming election. He first won the position in 2014 and secured a third term in 2022 with just over half the vote. The race comes as the office plays a key role in funding local services through property taxes.
The county assessor’s office is responsible for setting property values, handling tax appeals, and applying exemptions. It also identifies unassessed properties—this year uncovering nearly 1,000 aircraft worth $3.5 billion. In 2022, the office valued over $2 trillion in property, generating more than $20 billion in tax revenue.
Property taxes account for nearly 25% of L.A. County’s general fund. These funds support essential services like schools, police, and healthcare. However, the system operates under Proposition 13, a 1978 law capping annual tax increases at 2% and setting a base rate of 1%. Critics claim this discourages home sales and worsens the state’s housing shortage. Transparency has become a major issue in the race. The office’s reputation was damaged in 2012 when former assessor John Noguez was charged with taking bribes to lower property assessments. Prang’s opponents now emphasise reform and accountability as key campaign themes.
The election will decide who oversees one of the county’s largest revenue sources. The winner will manage a system that balances tax collection with fairness and transparency. With billions in funding at stake, the role carries significant responsibility for local services.
