LA mayoral race heats up as debates spotlight Bass, Raman and Pratt's wild-card bid
The Los Angeles mayoral race is gaining momentum as debates put the spotlight on pressing city issues. Public safety and homelessness have become central topics for candidates vying for the position. This week, two key debates will feature incumbent Karen Bass, Councilmember Nithya Raman, and an unexpected contender—reality TV personality Spencer Pratt.
On Tuesday night, Karen Bass and Nithya Raman will face off in a debate hosted by Sherman Oaks homeowners. The event comes amid growing interest in their rivalry, especially after Raman, once an ally of Bass, decided to challenge her for the mayoral seat.
The following evening, KNBC4 will broadcast a televised debate including Bass, Raman, and Pratt. His inclusion has raised eyebrows, given his Republican affiliation in a city dominated by Democrats. However, his background in reality television could give him an edge in front of the cameras. Not all candidates made the cut for the KNBC/Telemundo debate. Rae Huang and tech entrepreneur Adam Miller were excluded for failing to reach the 5% poll threshold. Huang has raised over £200,000 since entering the race and is resonating with younger voters. Miller, meanwhile, loaned his campaign $2.5 million and pushed NBC to reconsider its debate rules. Pratt’s campaign now faces the challenge of distancing him from former President Trump to win over Los Angeles voters. His presence in the race adds an unpredictable element to the discussions on the city’s future.
The upcoming debates will shape the mayoral contest as candidates clash over solutions for Los Angeles. Bass and Raman’s rivalry will take centre stage, while Pratt’s media savvy could shake up the race. Meanwhile, excluded contenders like Huang and Miller continue campaigning, hoping to gain traction before election day.
