Labour MPs demand Miliband's ousting over energy policy backlash

Pressure is mounting on Keir Starmer to remove Ed Miliband from his Cabinet. The push comes as Labour MPs grow frustrated over energy policies and the cost of living crisis. A reshuffle is now expected after next week’s local elections. Dozens of Labour MPs have called for Miliband’s dismissal as Energy Secretary. Their anger stems from his refusal to approve new North Sea oil drilling licences. This stance has reportedly cost around 4,000 jobs in Scotland’s oil and drilling sector.

Some MPs argue that sacking Miliband would be a decisive move to reassert Starmer’s leadership. One Red Wall MP described it as a 'bold' step to show authority. Ministers have privately criticised Miliband, claiming his policies are blocking necessary action.

Despite the backlash, Miliband maintains that renewable energy is the answer to unstable bills. He has repeatedly pushed for 'home-grown, clean power' as the long-term solution. However, speculation persists that he may yet approve new drilling, contradicting his earlier position.

Starmer is now weighing a Cabinet reshuffle following Labour’s local elections on Thursday. Miliband’s role as Net Zero secretary appears particularly vulnerable in the potential changes. The dispute highlights tensions between Labour’s green policies and economic concerns. A reshuffle could reshape the party’s approach to energy and the cost of living. The outcome will depend on Starmer’s decision after next week’s vote.
