Left Party pushes for permanent high-speed rail upgrades in Saxony-Anhalt

The Left Party in Saxony-Anhalt is calling for better high-speed rail links in the region. They want regular ICE services between Salzwedel and Magdeburg, as well as improved connections to Berlin and Hanover. The push comes as temporary routes show strong demand during ongoing construction work. At the moment, Salzwedel has a temporary hourly ICE service to Berlin and Hamburg. This was introduced because of ongoing construction, but the Left Party argues it proves a permanent route would work. They are now urging the state government to make the Berlin-Hamburg line via Stendal and Salzwedel a fixed part of the timetable.

The party also wants a lasting high-speed link between Magdeburg, Berlin, and Hanover. Their proposal highlights the need for better transport infrastructure in Saxony-Anhalt, pointing to the current temporary services as evidence of public demand. If successful, the changes would mean faster and more reliable train travel for both commuters and long-distance passengers. The Left Party insists that securing these routes should be a priority for regional transport planning.

The Left Party’s campaign focuses on turning temporary rail success into permanent improvements. A fixed ICE connection would link Salzwedel, Stendal, and Magdeburg more efficiently to major cities. The state government has yet to respond to the formal request.
