German youth protest military spending, demand education funding instead
Around 150 young protesters gathered in Halle’s market square on May 8 to voice opposition against military expansion and potential conscription. The demonstration coincided with the anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe and formed part of a larger nationwide day of action. The protest saw students walking out in over 130 cities across Germany. In Halle, chants of 'The rich want war, the youth want a future!' echoed as demonstrators held banners reading 'Our future is not your army' and 'Invest in minds, not in cannons'. Many criticised the government’s decision to allocate over 100 billion euros to the military this year, arguing that funds should instead address social needs.
One speaker highlighted crumbling school buildings and teacher shortages as clear signs of neglect. Another demonstrator questioned why money was flowing to arms manufacturers like Rheinmetall rather than repairing classrooms. Meanwhile, two Bundeswehr soldiers in uniform stood nearby, observing the protest from a distance. The group demanded greater investment in social infrastructure and a shift away from what they called *'war readiness'*. Their calls centred on securing a peaceful future rather than expanding military capabilities.
The demonstration in Halle reflected broader concerns among young people about national spending priorities. With protests held in cities nationwide, organisers made clear their demand for resources to be redirected from defence to education and social services.
