Even 35 years after German reunification, the divide between East and West remains a topic of debate—at times appearing wider than ever. The differing social imprints of the two regions continue to shape young adults born after 1989, argues sociologist and author Nora Zabel in her book United in Division: The East German Generation Z Between Two Worlds, published in October 2025.
In her work, Zabel examines the hopes, aspirations, mindsets, and fears of her generation, molded by both the legacy of the GDR and the dynamic interplay between East and West. Through conversations with contemporaries from both former East and West Germany, she traces the roots and underlying causes of these enduring divisions.
