Life-sentence inmate launches anti-Semitic attack on Jewish chaplain in UK prison
A violent assault took place at HMP Whitemoor on 14 September 2025, when inmate Joseph Gynane attacked a Jewish prison chaplain. The 41-year-old, already serving a life sentence for murder, targeted the chaplain because of his faith and left him with serious injuries. Gynane approached the chaplain from behind and punched him while shouting Allahu Akbar. The victim, wearing a black Jewish skullcap, fell to the ground and suffered a broken jaw and thumb. He was later treated at Peterborough City Hospital.
During the trial, Judge Andrew Hurst called Gynane’s beliefs 'anti-Semitic, florid and ideologically disturbing'. The court heard that Gynane had covered his cell walls with graffiti, including slogans like *Free Palestine* and *Death to the IDF*. Detective Constable Emma Purser described the attack as 'shocking and despicable'. Gynane pleaded guilty to racially aggravated assault causing grievous bodily harm. He was already imprisoned for the 2019 murder of Mohamed Elmi. The judge imposed an additional 11-year sentence, meaning Gynane will not be eligible for release before 2055.
The assault has added years to Gynane’s existing life term. Authorities have warned of his continued risk of violence, particularly against those he perceives as ideological opponents. The chaplain’s injuries have since been treated, but the case highlights ongoing concerns about extremist behaviour in prisons.
