At the bottom of the image, there is text which reads "The Grand Carnival of Napoleon, the Emperor of France, from the Church of Saint-Denis, Dec. 1785". The people in the image appear to be celebrating the grand carnival, with some of them holding flags and other decorations.

State Premier Schweitzer Celebrates as Johannes Gutenberg

Minister President Schweitzer celebrates as Johannes Gutenberg - Mainz Carnival unites leaders as Premier dons Gutenberg costume for Rose Monday

"Great to have you all here!"—tirelessly, state leader Schweitzer booms a thunderous "Helau! Helau! Helau!" to the passing crowds in Mainz.

Rhineland-Palatinate's Minister-President Alexander Schweitzer (SPD) stuck with tradition on Rose Monday. The head of government once again appeared on the parade's honorary grandstand near Mainz Cathedral dressed as Johannes Gutenberg.

"It was fun last year, and this year it just felt right again," Schweitzer said with a laugh about his costume choice. "It suits Rhineland-Palatinate—and it suits Mainz." The monument to the inventor of movable-type printing, standing opposite the grandstand, also sported a traditional Carnival hat, just like Schweitzer.

Political heavyweights join the revelry

Cheerful and in high spirits, the minister-president greeted the passing floats and groups with an endless stream of booming "Helau! Helau! Helau!" Schweitzer repeatedly called out, "Great to have you all here!" and "Welcome to Mainz," announcing each new procession as it approached.

Alongside the minister-president, other political figures from Rhineland-Palatinate joined in the festivities: Mainz's Lord Mayor Nino Haase (independent) swayed and laughed alongside Interior Minister Michael Ebling (SPD), Finance Minister Doris Ahnen (SPD), and Justice Minister Philipp Fernis (FDP).
