Mainz-Neustadt may expand Park@Night to ease late-night parking chaos
Mainz SPD Calls for Expansion of Discounted Nighttime Parking to Neustadt District
The SPD faction in Mainz-Neustadt's local district council is pushing to extend the city's discounted overnight parking scheme to the neighborhood. Specifically, it wants the three public parking garages—Quartiersgarage, Rheinallee III, and Weinlager—to be included in the Park@Night program to ease parking pressure in residential areas. The proposal emerges from a faction inquiry ahead of the local council's upcoming meeting on Wednesday (April 29) and the city administration's response.
The Social Democrats argue that lower nighttime rates could reduce cruising for parking in Neustadt and free up street parking. Currently, the three garages—operated by Mainzer Parken GmbH (PMG) and ContiPark—do not participate in the program.
City Deems Plan "Sensible and Effective"
The city administration supports the initiative. In her response, Transport Councilor Janina Steinkrüger (Greens) noted that occupancy in the garages between 7 PM and 6 AM is generally low. The Park@Night concept is therefore seen as a "sensible and effective" way to make better use of available capacity and shift more vehicles from streets into garages.
The reason these garages are not yet part of the program lies with their owners. The city is currently in discussions with them but has not yet received a response. It remains unclear whether or when the garages will join the scheme.
Wohnbau Mainz Would Extend Offer to Tenants
The SPD also asked about special rates for tenants of Wohnbau Mainz. The city administration stated that no binding commitments can be made at this stage, as such offers depend on the garages' participation in the nighttime tariff.
Wohnbau Mainz itself views the program as an attractive option for its tenants and actively supports it. The housing company already informs its Old Town residents about the scheme. If Neustadt's garages join Park@Night, Wohnbau would also notify its tenants in the district.
