Mainz raises rainbow flag ahead of IDAHOBIT to champion LGBTIQ+ rights
Mainz will raise the rainbow flag on May 13, 2023, as part of its commitment to diversity and inclusion. The move comes ahead of the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) on May 17. Mayor Nino Haase emphasised the city’s dedication to equal rights and respect for all. The rainbow flag will fly as a visible symbol of solidarity and acceptance. It marks Mainz’s stance against queerphobia and its support for an open society. The date coincides with IDAHOBIT, which commemorates the World Health Organization’s 1990 decision to remove homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses.
Mainz has long supported LGBTIQ+ rights, establishing a coordination office for equality in 2013. Mayor Haase reaffirmed the city’s ongoing backing for related projects and initiatives. Alongside this, a new working group, *Hate Crime Against LGBTIQ+ People and Women*, has been formed to tackle rising violence in public spaces. The city is also preparing to launch an initiative specifically targeting hate crime. This programme will be introduced and implemented in the near future.
The flag-raising on May 13 sends a clear message of unity and social diversity. Mainz’s actions reflect its continued efforts to protect and promote LGBTIQ+ rights. The city remains focused on reducing hate crime and fostering inclusion.
