Long-Neglected Former "City-Hotel Neubrunnenhof" in Mainz City Center Gets New Agreement

A solution has been reached for the long-abandoned former City-Hotel Neubrunnenhof in Mainz's city center. In discussions, Mayor Nino Haase (independent) and the property owner, healthcare group Emeis, agreed on a way forward, according to an announcement from the city. The dilapidated state of the building on Große Bleiche has been a public nuisance for some time, with complaints about trash and fecal matter.

Under the new arrangement, the city of Mainz will take responsibility for cleaning the area around the building and bill Emeis for the costs. "The proposal for the city of Mainz to carry out the cleaning and restoration of the surrounding area—with Emeis covering the expenses—was fully supported," Mayor Haase reported. Initial cleanup efforts and an on-site inspection have already taken place, he added.

Haase noted that earlier attempts to contact Emeis had gone unanswered for a long time. Only after a change in personnel at the company in 2025 did a cooperative point of contact emerge. "For problem properties like the Neubrunnenhof or Augustinerstraße 22, it's important to me as mayor that we, as a city, remain persistent. We've already seen success with the latter, and now, though delayed, we have justified hopes for improvement at the Neubrunnenhof as well."

In addition to cleaning, there are plans to cover the façade with "attractive patterns" to mask the building's vacancy. "We are currently coordinating a comprehensive solution," Haase said.

Owner Plans to Sell the Building

During the discussions, Emeis indicated its intention to sell the property. The company will not proceed with its original construction plans, despite holding a valid building permit for over two years. The decision was attributed to "changed framework conditions." The city is now reviewing its next steps.
