Malawi boosts cybersecurity and digital learning with World Bank support

Malawi is stepping up efforts to strengthen its digital defences with renewed support from the World Bank. The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has announced a partnership aimed at improving data protection and cybersecurity across the country. The initiative will also expand digital access in schools through new technology and connectivity programmes. The collaboration will focus on securing critical infrastructure and improving legal frameworks for cybersecurity. Technical assistance from the World Bank will help Malawi establish stronger data protection systems and boost regional cybersecurity capabilities. MACRA is currently working to set up two key institutions: the Data Protection Authority (DPA) and the Malawi Computer Emergency Response Team (MwCERT). These bodies will operate independently to enhance governance and national preparedness against cyber threats.

Under the Universal Service Fund, the partnership will also support the Connect-a-School project. This initiative aims to provide computer equipment and internet access to schools, increasing digital learning opportunities for students. Director General of MACRA, Mayamiko Nkoloma, highlighted the importance of the World Bank's continued involvement. He stated that the partnership would significantly advance Malawi's digital resilience and help build a more secure digital ecosystem.

The renewed support from the World Bank will assist Malawi in developing stronger institutions and infrastructure for data protection. The establishment of the DPA and MwCERT, along with improved cybersecurity measures, will enhance the country's ability to safeguard digital systems. Additionally, the Connect-a-School project will expand access to technology in education, furthering Malawi's digital growth.
