Drunk 49-Year-Old Falls Asleep at the Wheel - Man found asleep at wheel with blood alcohol level 8 times over limit

A 49-year-old man was discovered asleep behind the wheel of his parked car after driving erratically in Sassenburg. Police responded to reports of a vehicle swerving dangerously in the Neudorf-Platendorf area. Upon arrival, they found the driver unconscious with an extremely high blood alcohol level.

The incident began when a witness spotted the man's car moving unpredictably on the road. Concerned for safety, they alerted authorities, who quickly located the vehicle. Inside, the driver was asleep, and officers struggled to wake him.

After rousing the man, police conducted a breathalyser test. His blood alcohol concentration measured 3.2 per mille—far above the legal limit. Officers immediately confiscated his driver's licence and took a blood sample for further testing. This case follows a troubling trend in Lower Saxony. Between 2021 and 2025, police recorded around 1,200 instances of drivers caught with blood alcohol levels exceeding 2.0 per mille. The numbers fluctuated yearly, with 248 cases in 2021 and 231 in 2025.

The man now faces criminal charges for driving under the influence. His licence remains suspended while the investigation continues. Authorities have stressed the dangers of drink-driving, particularly at such extreme alcohol levels.
