Mainz's Dog Park Plans Spark Political Tensions Over Secret Site Selection
Mainz city council is facing questions over its plans for a new dog park. The Green Party has demanded answers after reports suggested a site in Bretzenheim had already been chosen. Officials insist no final decision has been made, despite months of searching for suitable land. The search for a dog park location began in early 2025. Eight possible sites across Mainz were reviewed, but only one met all requirements. The others were dismissed due to existing uses, insufficient space, or unavailability.
The remaining option is a plot along Hinkelsteinerstraße in Bretzenheim. While the administration sees no major issues with using this land, the Green Party has raised concerns. They questioned why councillors were not informed about the evaluations before any commitment was made. Deputy mayor Manuela Matz (CDU) rejected the criticism, stating the process had been handled correctly. The city administration also clarified that no binding agreement on the Bretzenheim site has yet been signed.
The Green Party’s inquiry follows media reports that the Bretzenheim location was already decided. The city maintains that the site is still under consideration. A final decision on the dog park’s future remains pending.
