Loose aircraft wheel sparks A60 motorway chaos near Bingen
A loose landing gear wheel caused major delays on the A60 motorway toward Bingen early this morning. The incident led to fuel spills, lane closures and long queues for drivers in the area. The trouble began when a detached aircraft wheel ended up on the carriageway between the Hechtsheim Tunnel and the Mainz-Hechtsheim-West exit. A passing semitrailer struck the debris, rupturing its diesel tank. Fuel spread across roughly 500 metres of the road.
Cleanup efforts started shortly after, forcing authorities to shut the middle and right lanes around 8:30 a.m. Only the left lane remained open through the tunnel section, slowing traffic to a crawl.
Police have advised drivers to follow instructions on overhead signs near the tunnel. The warnings aim to prevent further accidents while recovery teams work at the scene. The spill and lane restrictions caused significant disruption during the morning rush. Authorities continue to monitor the area as cleanup progresses. Motorists are reminded to stay alert for updated traffic guidance.
