Mecklenburgische Seenplatte sees crime drop—but sexual offenses surge in 2025
Crime trends in Landkreis Mecklenburgische Seenplatte shifted sharply in 2025, with some offenses rising dramatically while others fell. Overall, the district recorded 15,122 criminal cases—a 2.6% drop from the previous year. But behind the headline figure, stark contrasts emerged in specific categories. Sexual offenses surged by 56%, reaching 462 cases in 2025. This spike far outpaced the state average of 28.2%, with Mecklenburg-Vorpommern reporting 2,573 cases overall. Nearby Landkreis Vorpommern-Rügen also saw a 30% rise to 434 cases.
Reports of rape and sexual coercion in the district more than doubled, climbing 143% to 17 cases. Meanwhile, crimes involving child pornography—including possession, distribution, or production—soared by 138% to 223 cases. On a positive note, motor vehicle thefts plummeted by 41% to just 23 cases. Theft offenses overall declined by 7%, with 4,140 incidents reported. Homicides also fell, with ten cases recorded—three fewer than in 2024—all of which were solved. The police clearance rate improved slightly, rising by 1.5 percentage points to 63.7%. The total number of identified suspects dipped to 6,721, though the share of non-German suspects edged up marginally to 1,191.
The district's crime figures for 2025 reveal a mixed picture. While thefts and homicides decreased, sexual offenses and child pornography cases rose sharply. Authorities will now face the challenge of addressing these divergent trends in the year ahead.
