Medvedev offers Nizhny Novgorod mayor a shot at Orenburg governorship
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has offered Vadim Bulavinov the chance to lead one of Russia’s regions. The current mayor of Nizhny Novgorod was approached during a meeting in Moscow last week. Bulavinov responded positively to the proposal but has since declined to comment further. The discussions began when Medvedev asked Bulavinov about his interest in becoming a governor. The offer comes as Orenburg Oblast prepares for a leadership change, with the current governor’s term ending on June 15, 2010.
United Russia, the ruling party in the regional parliament, is expected to nominate candidates for the post by April 30. Consultations were held on April 26 between party members and Vladislav Surkov, a senior official, to discuss gubernatorial appointments in both Rostov and Orenburg.
Bulavinov’s potential move follows Medvedev’s direct proposal. While he has not confirmed his candidacy, his positive response suggests he is considering the role. The final decision will depend on United Russia’s formal nomination process. If selected, Bulavinov would take over Orenburg Oblast after the current governor’s term expires in June. United Russia’s candidate list will determine the next steps in the appointment. The party’s decision is expected to be announced by the end of April.
